We had the unfortunate experience of our son having an asthma attack whilst we were taking a day trip in France. We had to take our son to the Emergency Room at the Children's Hospital. We advised this hotel we would be late (the hotel was a 5 hr drive away from the Hospital) and the proprietor told us that she would leave the outer door unlocked for us. As it turned out, we didn't make it back to the hotel until 4am having been held up at the hospital and also experiencing extremely bad traffic. We arrived at the hotel to find that the proprietor's husband had waited up for us and proceeded to abuse us for being so late. We apologized and tried to explain that we were held up at the hospital with our sick son but he would not listen to us and continued to angrily rant at us about the hotel "not being a 4-star and if you want this kind of service, go to a hotel that provides 24 hour service... I have to work tomorrow and you ruined my Christmas" etc etc. He continued to rant at us all, not even thinking of what impact his angry outburst would have on our children. The least he could do was pull us aside and explain his concerns out of earshot of the children. His outburst was most distressing for our children, especially our son who was very tired and sick. He had also ranted to us via letter which he had attached to our door handle and we also found a phone message waiting for us when we got home.

I had no idea that he would be waiting for us because the proprietor never mentioned this fact either on the phone when I called her to advise we would be late, or in their list of hotel policies.

If you want to be subjected to verbal abuse, go ahead, book the hotel. Just pray you never upset this man... he has no control over his temper and no understanding regarding situations out of our control. I should also mention that he has very strict instructions (cards showing what is verboten throughout the room) that tells how you should not do this and not do that. It is quite an exhaustive list!
If he is reading this review, my advice to him is to make it clear to his guests that he expects them to arrive at a certain time. Also to make it clear to his wife that she must not offer to leave the door open for guests. This couple need to communicate better.
Minus 10 stars for terrible customer relations. I will never EVER stay here again.
The proprietor has replied that their hotel is not in France. So what?!

My family and I visited Heidelberg just one week ago. We booked Gasthaus zum Loewen despite some of the terrifying reviews on google due to the attractive price. The owner welcomed us and our small dog very friendly, our dog got a welcome treat and we have been shown our rooms.

It is true that there are several rules the owner asked us to follow. And yes, it is true that he cares about his property. However, you can see this everywhere: the hotel is an excellent shape, perfectly clean and amazingly maintained. The owner and his family were always very friendly and never raised their voices - despite of some reviews referring about the opposite - even when we didn't follow the rules. I assume it is about communication and its tone. We felt always welcomed and our stay at Haus Zum Loewen positively underlined our holiday in Heidelberg.

The owner recommended several restaurants and sights in and around Heidelberg. Gruener Baum and Waldhorn are close to the hotel and offer amazing "Deutsche Kueche" with large portions by very low prices. They also have a cozy beer garden that we enjoyed very much. The bus stop is just at the hotel and the bus takes you downtown within 20 minutes.

We hope to come back next summer with some friends and are looking forward to another great holiday stay.

A nice apartment and a roomy terrace at a good price - very good value for money. We've had quite a bit to do with the owners and find them pretty reasonable. Some of the other English-language reviews criticize them, but my guess is that their authors haven't had much experience in Germany. We lived here many years, and one of the reasons why Germany works so well is that are a lot of rules; people know what they are, and abide by them. That can seem odd or stifling to foreigners, but it definitely has its benefits. This place would not be nearly as well-maintained or efficient without its owners keeping close watch over things.

The worst hotel...Das schlechteste Gasthaus

My large American family and I had the displeasure of staying in this hotel for two nights. This hotel charges extra for common necessities like TOWELS and made us pay in advance. The male owner of the hotel is a control freak. He gave us instructions on how to live properly in our hotel rooms; there were 5 pages of rules hanging in each room. We were told to open all windows and doors fully for 5 minutes after cooking or showering to lower the humidity in the rooms despite outside temperatures of -3*C. The male owner has sensors on every door and window to monitor when you open the windows and doors.

We were specifically asked NOT to adjust the convection water heater thermostats because the temperature can fluctuate during the night. During our first night one room became unbearably hot and some of my family members cracked the windows because we were specifically instructed not to touch the heater thermostats. The next night, the male owner cornered two people in our party and proceeded to verbally harass them 'auf Deutsch' for 15 minutes about how the windows had been left open all day and all night. He angrily ranted about the cost of heating and the waste of natural resources and threatened to charge us €50-100 extra. Needless to say, this outburst was completely uncalled for and at worst was a simple misunderstanding of his numerous rules.

In summary, the male owner of this hotel is incredibly hostile, especially towards non-Germans. If you read some other reviews of the hotel you will quickly find reviews describing similar experiences from foreigners mingled amongst positive reviews from Germans. You will also notice that the owner posts responses to complaints about his establishment and proceeds to give himself a 5 star rating, which is unethical. This hotel expects you to abide by an unreasonable amount of rules and monitors your every action. Besides the invasion of privacy and unnecessary stress, there are clear safety hazards with staying at this business. Staying at this hotel almost ruined the final days of our great vacation in Deutschland. I would avoid this hotel and its male psychopathic owner at all costs. I wish I could give a lower rating than 1 star.

We love staying in this place. It's like a home away from home. The owner is like an extended family to us. I was sick and they do everything - calling the ambulance and assisting us (since we don't speak the language) They make the trouble of ringing the hospital to en quire about my health it touches us too much. And when we miss our flight they did not turn us out from their house but find a way to accomodate us for one more night in their own private home. We cannot find any other words to say how much we appreciate their kindness and to say thank you for everything that they do in helping us...and we take this opportunity to recommend this place to all our friends... You could never go wrong! Two thumbs up! and also to all German people who are so friendly and helpful to us, to all the staff of St. JosephsKrankenhaus of Heidelberg..Thank you so much Guys...We Love You All...God Bless!!!!!
