A word of advice from someone who has stayed in Goler house: Don't stay there, there are plenty of places off campus that are safer, nicer and cheaper. Even if you are an incoming international student, most of the housing companies in Rochester can help you and understand your situation better. They are also more flexible. Here are few of the big issues with Goler house:

1) Parking: Goler house has a very limited on-site parking. You are supposed to park across the highway in Whipple park and take shuttles back and forth. This is Rochester, not NYC or Chicago, you don't have to have parking problems. Also, UR Parking is quick to make sure you or your guests will get ticketed if they park in Goler.

2) False Fire Alarms: Out of fear of being liable I assume, the smoke detectors are all connected. If you have a burnt food or a smoking tenant somewhere in building the alarms will go off in every single unit. This is so unbelievably frequent that you would think they should have fixed this.

3) No advance notice for entrance to your unit: The maintenance crew enter your unit without any prior notice. They are kind enough to knock the door before they enter, but if you are listening to music or sleeping and don't respond on time, suddenly you will see two men with wrenches and pipe snake in your bathroom.

4) You don't get your mails when you need them: Goler house asks USPS/Fedex/UPS to deliver packages to their office which is open 9-5pm. It means you come home late, you will not get your package. And that gift that you paid $45 more to get overnight weekend delivery will has to stay at the office until Monday.

5) When you had enough and you decide to move out, they make it hard for you: They require 30 day prior notice, which is a common practice and fine. However, they will allow you to leave on 11th or 26th of each month (not 1, 15 or 30 which will allow you to start your new lease and avoid paying for a place you are not staying). Also, they need notarization for lease termination, just to increase the chance that you miss the 11th or 26th deadline and have to pay two more weeks.

Honestly, shame on you. One would think that being affiliated with UR, there's more understanding and flexibility with respect to the situations that (sometimes international) students are facing. Sadly not the case.

If you can withstand the frequently occurring LOUD and GLARING fire alarm in your bedroom (possibly at 3'o clock in the morning), it is a great place to live. Statistically, the false alarm goes off twice a week.
