Jewish Quarter Walking Tour

Precious Legacy Tours s.r.o.

Prague is one of the most important cities in the history of Jewish Europe, at one time being home to the largest Ahkenazi population anywhere in the world. Under the apartheid-style regime common to much of medieval Europe, these people were all confined in a small space approximately 2 miles wide - Prague's Jewish Quarter. Known nowadays as Josefov, in honour of Emperor Franz Josef who first emancipated Bohemia's Jews, today's Jewish Quarter is a completely different place, but many synaogues, the Old Cemetery and the Jewish Town Hall all still remain. You can see the oldest continually-used synagogue anyhwere north of the Alps, a moving tribute to all of Czechoslovakia's Jews murdered in the Holocaust and the beautiful Spanish Synagogue, decorated in geometric, Sephardic stlyes influenced by Moorish art.
