The hostel itself is great. Nice sized, clean rooms and bathroom. Friendly staff. Delicious breakfast included in price and basically also free dinner as the hostel makes a hearty soup every evening and puts it in the hostel kitchen for the guests. The huge issue is outside the hostel - a ridiculously loud train whistles and blows all day long (starting at 4am!) and shakes the house. It's really a shame because the hostel itself is great, but if you want a good nights sleep it can't be recommended.

Ok it's clean.... but has 2 major flaws. First the immense railtrack that runs up the road for 20 hours a day making huge noise and the room shaking ! Second the plumbing is shot, with no hot or cold water for hours on end, it just comes and goes as it pleases. Not great service either. Few local facilities Would not return, much better places elsewhere.

I stumbled into this hostel after a long bus ride. They immediately offered me a frew coffee at the restaurant downstairs while I waited for someone to show me my room. Dorms are 18$, but this includes a free incredible breakfast with 6 choices or french toast, burritos, omelte, some kind if chicken and each comes with a bowl of fresh fruit and tea/coffee. Coffee, tea are always free all day, free soup in the evenings, a free towel to use and the dorms are beautiful, clean and only 5 beds per room. When i visited it was dead and I had a room to myself. It has a nice balcony, common kitchen, and two couch areas, one with a tv. The Shakti restaurant offers 10% meals during your stay with lots of vegetarian options and variety. I was staying for one night only and hopping a 6am bus so they cooked me my free breakfast in the evening.
The only downfall is the noisy train every so often going by, bring ear plugs!

Don't stay here if you enjoy sleeping. In addition to being located on one of the busiest streets in San José, Hostel Shakti is adjacent to railroad tracks. The diesel engines roll by regularly, especially in the late evening and early morning, blessing their horns directly outside the room windows.

We were never given out breakfast tickets or even told about the free breakfast.

Despite having my passport for collateral, the staff hounded is relentlessly for payment. We relented and paid over half up front with arrangements to pay the rest at checkout. Even with this agreement, we were awoken by a knock at our door at 11pm by a drunken staff member requesting payment.

All in all, it was one of the worst hostel experiences we've had in Central America.

The rooms are clean and nice, but I still wouldn't recommend staying here.

I stayed here with a friend on the first night of my trip and we both loved it enough to come back for the last night, before flying out of San Jose. On both occasions the hostel owner greeted us warmly and made us feel right at home. The rooms are large and clean. The mattresses are comfortable. The bathrooms are clean. The kitchen is small, but clean and orderly, and there is a quaint restaurant by the same name under the hostel. Our host brought us complimentary drinks to welcome us both days. In the mornings, since we left early we did not expect to enjoy the complimentary breakfast, but our hostess prepared it for us early and packed it up for us to take on the road. I will definitely return to the hostel the next time I stay in San Jose.
